BECAUSE OF YOU AND HADASSAH…Hadassah College Jerusalem: It’s About Community

Hadassah College Jerusalem: It’s About Community

Hadassah College has dedicated itself to community involvement programs and encourages its students to volunteer within the college community or for the citizens of Jerusalem.

Participating in these projects makes students eligible for various scholarships. But above and beyond the financial gain for each student, these programs have social, communal and personal benefits of equal importance. The projects make students aware of the community around them, and teach them to help, listen, and understand its citizens. These activities benefit the people of Jerusalem and the wider Israeli society as well.

There are two types of scholarships available for those who volunteer. For the need-based scholarships, students volunteer on a limited basis--usually within the college. Activities include tutoring students with learning or physical challenges or participating in activities within various academic departments. The Hadas program scholarships allow students to participate in activities both within and without the college. Students volunteer for Perach, a nationwide big brother/big sister program; hi-tech clubs, providing computer tutorials in high schools throughout the city; homes for the aged; battered women’s shelters and more.

Brachi* is a third-year student in Medical Laboratory Sciences. Last year she volunteered at Hadassah Ein Kerem, spending some of her time in the neurology department and some providing social activities for patients. This year she is volunteering at the Association for Breast Cancer. Brachi received a merit scholarship for her academic achievements. Her future plans include continuing for a master’s degree in cancer research.

Amitai, from Eilat, is a third-year student in Biotechnology. Amitai mentors a student at the College and participates in a new biomed project with the organization Ruach Hadasha, a joint volunteer initiative of students and business people. He also loves music and helped set up the Nevi’im band, which performs at all College events. On holidays Amitai and the band perform at a home for the aged.
